The episode was a finely tuned wrap-up for the whole season that explored the changing dynamics between the USSR and the USA with a focus on the boots "on the ground".
With the capture of William, Gabriel recommends (I thought told, but I guess I was wrong) that Elizabeth and Phillip pack the family up and return to the USSR. Sure, that escape route has always been in play due to the nature of their jobs, but now, confronted with the reality of it, neither are so sure they want to go back.
Elizabeth daydreams about what her hometown might look like today. Phillip rationally states, probably not that different. The show does a lot to display the bleak, dreary conditions in Russia and contrast it with the vibrant American lifestyle. We've seen Henry play video games. Paige with her room full of posters. The kids free to roam around the neighborhood. This will most certainly not be the case if they start a new life in the USSR.
This theme continues its relevancy with Phillip's son, and so many others, whose right to speak is suppressed by jail and accusations of mental illness. I'm thinking it's a few years off from 1988 when Gorbachev introduced Glasnost (an increase in freedom of speech for Soviets) as evidence by witnessing Oleg's study of the Challenger's design. The Challenger exploded in 1986, so perhaps we are in 1984 or 1985.
This poses the question as to what are the Jennings fighting for? Yes, they love their country, as they should. However, their country focuses on the evil USA, but Phillip and Elizabeth have come to realize that not all is bad with America. In fact, most of it is quite good.
Where does this leave their family?
So while this was not the most action-packed season finale it tied the season together well and lends itself to a powerful 5th season. I'm sure we will continue to explore if it is possible for Phillip and Elizabeth to stay true to their country all the while being pulled toward their adoptive country.
I personally look forward to it.
Congratulations to Kerri Russell and Matthew Rhys on their new baby as well. Many blessings to you fine actors!
