I really liked this book.
I thought it was a great combination of nostalgia and plot - neither suffering from the overindulgence of the other.
However, if you were not born between, say, 1972 and 1980, a bunch of the book will be lost to you.
If you were born between that time frame, this book will delight you.
Not all of the cultural references will hit their mark on an individual basis. Yet, there is enough for everyone to spark a few fond memories from your childhood.
Personally, my favorites were references to War Games, Ladyhawke, Pac-Man, & Quebert.
The nostalgia is not an overcompensation for a lack of plot. While the nostalgia drives the plot, the plot alone is worthy of a listen. The only drawback is that if you don't know some semblance of the history of the 80's you may get dragged down by the weight of it all.
It bears absolute mentioning that a great delight of our 80"s childhood narrates the book, Mr. Wil Wheaton. I'm not sure there was one person in the 80's who did not love Gordie or Wesley Crusher. Just to listen to him narrate the book made me smile. He did a great job.
Overall, the book is a fun, delightful read that never seemed too tedious.
